This book shows you how to build an engineering practice from zero without a business degree, a mentor, or a roadmap that actually applies to what we do. It took me from a salaried engineer whose boss said no to an opportunity that would have changed my career… to $2M+ in annual revenue, 300 completed projects, and a team of 40 that does not depend on me showing up every day.
In that time, Modern Engineering Solutions grew from one resignation letter and zero clients to a licensed firm operating across 9 states, working with municipalities, engineering firms, and private developers on water and wastewater infrastructure.
Are you ready to own your career trajectory?
Tired of someone else controlling your opportunities? Want to build a practice that serves your life instead of consuming it? Ready to transition from employee to business owner, but don’t know where to start?
Engineer Your Freedom is the practical roadmap you’ve been looking for.
This book walks you through the exact path from zero to $1M in revenue, covering:
No fluff. No theory. Just honest, engineer-to-engineer guidance from someone who’s built the exact business you’re trying to create.
About the Author
Michael Groselle, P.E., is the founder of Modern Engineering Solutions, a multi-state water and wastewater engineering firm. After walking away from traditional employment in 2017, he built MES from zero to over $2M in annual revenue with 40+ team members and 300+ completed projects.
While growing MES, Michael competed three times on American Ninja Warrior, played professional beach volleyball (beating multiple U.S. Olympians), and maintains an active rock climbing practice. His wife, Lacy, and kids have traveled to multiple countries because of the freedom this business model creates.
Building a successful practice isn’t about luck or shortcuts. It’s about making consistently good decisions, one at a time and designing a life worth living.
Chapter 1) The Journey Begins: The story of leaving corporate engineering, the struggle to find relevant guidance, and why traditional business advice doesn’t work for professional service providers where you are the product.
Chapter 2) Are You Ready? When to Branch Out: Assessment framework for determining if now is the right time to start your practice, signs of readiness (and warning signs you’re not), and what must be in place before making the leap.
Chapter 3) The No-Shit Fundamentals: Personal systems and foundations that keep you operating at peak performance, your body and mind are the infrastructure supporting your entire business.
Chapter 4) Building Your Foundation, Business Knowledge: Essential financial literacy, accounting basics, key metrics, and business fundamentals you need to avoid expensive mistakes that sink most new practices.
Chapter 5) Finding Your Focus, ICP & Niching Down: How to identify your ideal client profiles and why specialization is the fastest path to premium pricing and sustainable growth in professional services.
Chapter 6) Getting Started, First Revenue & Clients: Practical strategies for landing your first projects, building initial credibility, and generating revenue before you have an extensive portfolio.
Chapter 7) Systems & Processes, Working On vs. Working In: The five essential systems every practice needs (bookkeeping, file storage, collaboration, CRM, phone), when to implement them, and how to avoid building custom solutions that waste time.
Chapter 8) AI and Modern Tools: How to leverage AI to transform report writing, proposal generation, and deliverable production, completing in hours what used to take days while maintaining engineering judgment and quality.
Chapter 9) Protecting Your Time, The Zone vs. The Chaos: The critical difference between proactive and reactive work, how to protect focused engineering time, and systems for managing the two types of work that define your practice.
Chapter 10) The Two Critical First Hires: Why the executive assistant and technician roles matter most, which to hire first based on your situation, and how to structure these positions for maximum impact with creative global workforce strategies.
Chapter 1 is where it all started. A dirt field in Wyoming, a boss who said no, and a resignation letter sent the next morning.
Stop trading your expertise for a paycheck. Start building a practice that gives you ownership of your time, your decisions, and your future.
